THE FIRM
Dean and Dean/Associates Architects (DD/A) is a second-generation architectural firm established in Jackson, Mississippi in 1949. Its service area spread throughout the state of Mississippi during the fifties, expanded into the southeast region in the early eighties, and over the past two decades the firm has provided planning, architectural, and interior design services throughout the continental United States with completed or current projects in 23 states.
From its headquarters in Jackson, Mississippi, the firm offers comprehensive architectural services to a broad range of clients on a variety of project types.
DD/A enjoys a reputation for delivering innovative, leading edge facility planning, design and consultation through a process that is highly responsive and personalized to the specific needs and requirements of each client. This has resulted in a diverse client base and successful working relationships with a number of major entities and a history of repeat work. In fact, DD/A takes considerable pride in the fact that 90% of its workload comes from repeat clients.
The firm is characterized by the extremely high degree of diversification in building types designed. For example, in the highly specialized field of Healthcare architecture, DD/A has worked with over thirty healthcare institutions on projects totalling over one-half billion dollars in construction costs.
In the Commercial/Office building market, creative and diverse design solutions are evident in over two million square feet of office space. In the field of Education, DD/A boasts two highly acclaimed award-winning conference centers, numerous new schools and multiple expansion/renovation projects (including a $100 million building program for a single county school district), as well as various projects for community colleges, four-year colleges and major state universities.
Instituitonal/Civic work includes the award-winning Mississippi Department of Transportation building and participation in a joint venture for the multi-million dollar renovation/expansion to major facilities in the State's Capitol Complex. In the Judicial/Correctional category the firm has a wealth of diverse experience, including large-scale correctional facilities, justice/court complexes and jails with a combined construction value totaling in excess of $220 million.
Since it's founding, the firm has been in the forefront of Religious architecture with over 100 church projects, featuring highly acclaimed, multiple award-winning projects. In the Hospitality realm, the firm's body of work includes numerous Hotels of varying size and scale throughout the southeast region, and numerous Condominium projects currently in the design phase along the Florida, Alabama and Mississippi Gulf Coast.
DD/A has provided comprehensive design services to Retail clients for over two and one-half decades, having completed approximately 150 retail projects in over 20 states. The firm’s Retail portfolio is national in scope and includes shopping centers, power centers, life-style centers and department stores for a number of major national retailers and retail chains, including SAKS FIFTH AVENUE, The Bon Ton Group, Belk, Proffitt's, Parisian, McRae's, Younkers, Herberger's, and Carson Pirie Scott & Co. The firm is recognized for providing individualized service coupled with customer-friendly design for national fashion retail stores, specialty shops and restaurants, as well as mixed-use developments of varying size and scale.
In addition to its role as a leader in the field of architecture, DD/A is committed, both as a firm and through individual staff members, to serving the community on spiritual and humanitarian levels by actively supporting numerous charities as well as prison and inner-city ministries. DD/A has also established a scholarship in honor of the firm founder which is awarded annually to a deserving student at the Mississippi State University School of Architecture.
