500-MAN MINIMUM SECURITY FACILITY The firm was contracted to design an economical housing solution to alleviate extensive overcrowding in the state system. The prime directive - develop an economical facility that could be constructed in a short time frame. A comparative study between metal building, wood frame and masonry/structural steel systems was made to compare cost of construction, length of time to construct and lifespan of the completed structures. Following the comparison, the State of Mississippi selected the metal building system as being the most appropriate to meet the needs of the Department of Corrections. The completely self-supporting 14-building complex was constructed at a cost of $8.5 million and houses 500 minimum security inmates. This
